Early life
Khanna was born on October 6, 1946, in Peshawar, British India, now Pakistan, to Punjabi parents Kamla and Krishanchand Khanna. He was the youngest of four siblings, with three sisters and one brother. India was partitioned shortly after his birth, and his family moved from Peshawar to Bombay, now Mumbai.
He went to St. Mary’s School in Bombay until class II, then moved to Delhi. In 1957, the family relocated to Delhi, where he attended Mathura Road Delhi Public School. He was sent to Barnes School in Deolali, near Nashik, despite the family’s return to Bombay in 1960.
