Before starring in Gulzar’s Mere Apne in 1971, he appeared in a number of supporting roles. In the film Sabak, he was placed with his future wife Poonam Sinha, who was then known as Komal.
In 1970, he appeared in Khilona, Dulal Guha’s Dost, Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Jheel Ke Us Paar, and Gambler. He appeared in films with Amitabh Bachchan such as Raaste Ka Paththar, Yaar Meri Zindagi, Shaan, and Kala Paththar, the latter of which was the most successful. Later, he appeared in the films Bombay to Goa, Dostana, and Naseeb.
Between 1970 and 1975, his films as the leading man were a flop. Kalicharan, his first successful film as a leading man, was released in 1976. Subhash Ghai had approached N. N. Sippy with the storey of Kalicharan and expressed his desire to direct his first film.
After a few days, N. N. Sippy was ready to produce, but he only wanted to cast Rajesh Khanna in the lead part of Kalicharan. Only after N. N. Sippy had established with Rajesh Khanna that Khanna did not have dates for 1976 and 1977 did Sippy urge Subhash Ghai to proceed with the script and direct Kalicharan with Sinha in the lead.
Ab Kya Hoga, Khan Dost, Yaaraon Ka Yaar, Dillagi, Vishwanath, Muqabla, and Jaani Dushman were some of his significant films as lead heroes. From the early 1980s through the mid-1990s, he was a bankable action hero. In Bereham, Hathkadi, Bad Aur Badnaam, Chehre Pe Chehra, Hirasat, and Qatl, he featured alongside Sanjeev Kumar.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Naram Garam, Brij’s Bombay 405 Miles, and Taqdeer all featured him. However, in films such as Prakash Mehra’s Jawalamukhi, Amjad Khan’s Chor Police, and Ameer Aadmi, he has played the lead role.
Despite critical acclaim, Garib Aadmi and Raj Khosla’s Mera Dost Meraa Dushman were flops, putting his reputation as a leading man in jeopardy. He also produced and acted in the 1983 film Kalka, which was based on the lives of coal mine employees.
After that, he had roles in films like Dil E Nadan, Aaj Ka M.L.A Ram Avtaar, Maqsad, and Paapi Pet Ka Sawal Hai starring Rajesh Khanna as the lead. Sinha hosted a special episode of Sony Entertainment Television Asia’s Dus Ka Dum season 2 on October 3, 2009. Sinha is a member of the Indian National Congress Party, which he joined after the Bharatiya Janata Party denied him a seat in the 2019 Indian general elections. He got his start in politics by running in a by-election against Rajesh Khanna.
In an interview, Sinha stated that his greatest regret in life was running for office against his friend Khanna. Khanna won the race by 25,000 votes over Sinha, but he was hurt and never spoke to Sinha again. Sinha attempted to mend his friendship with Khanna, but this did not happen till Khanna’s death in 2012.
During the 2009 Indian general elections, he won the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar. He defeated Shekhar Suman, another Bollywood star.
Sinha received 316,549 votes out of a total of 552,293 votes cast. In the ensuing 2014 Indian general elections, he also won the seat. In 2014, he garnered 485,905 votes out of a total of 813,411 casts.

He was named the chairman of the BJP’s Culture and Arts Department in May 2006.
