Jeetendra was born as Ravi Kapoor into a Punjabi Khatri family in Amritsar, Punjab, to Amarnath and Krishna Kapoor, who ran a business that supplied fake jewellery to the film industry.

With his friend Rajesh Khanna, he attended St. Sebastian’s Goan High School in Girgaum, Mumbai, and subsequently went on to Siddharth College in Mumbai. He was cast as Sandhya’s double in the 1959 film Navrang while supplying jewellery to V. Shantaram.
