Early life

Om Puri was born in the city of Ambala. Rajesh Puri, his father, worked in the Indian Army and on the railways. His family was unsure of his date and year of birth because he lacked a birth certificate or papers, but his mother told him he was born two days after the Hindu holiday of Dussehra.

Puri’s uncle chose 9 March 1950 as his “official” birthday when he started school, but when he came to Mumbai as an adult, he looked up to when Dussehra was celebrated in 1950 and established his date of birth as 18 October.

Puri was born into a low-income family. His father, a railway employee, was arrested when he was six years old on suspicions of cement theft. As a result, their family was forced to become homeless.

Puri’s brother, Ved Prakash Puri, worked as a coolie (railway porter) to support his family, while Puri worked at a small tea store, did odd jobs, and collected coal from nearby railway tracks. Later, a female servant, Shanti, raised him and his brother’s children.
