His most well-known roles as a child actor were in Aag (1948) and Awaara (1951), in which he played the younger version of his older brother Raj Kapoor’s characters, and in Sangram (1950), in which he played the younger version of Ashok Kumar, and Dana Paani (1953), in which he co-starred with Bharat Bhushan. From 1948 through 1954, he appeared in four Hindi films as a kid actor.

Kapoor went to Matunga, Mumbai’s Don Bosco High School. In 1956, while working for their respective theatre organizations in Calcutta, he met English actress Jennifer Kendal. Shashi worked for his father’s theatre company, Prithvi Theatre, as both an assistant stage manager and a performer.
Jennifer was Geoffrey Kendal’s daughter, and Geoffrey’s Shakespearean troupe was also in Calcutta at the same time. Following their subsequent meeting, the pair fell in love and married in July 1958, despite initial opposition from the Kendals and encouragement from sister-in-law Geeta Bali. They appeared together in a number of films, most notably Merchant-Ivory movies.
Kapoor also received a National Award for his role in the 1993 film In Custody and portrayed the Rajah in the Gulliver’s Travels TV adaption (1996). He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government in 2011 for his services to Indian film.
