Nutan was born on June 4, 1936, as the eldest of four children of director-poet Kumarsen Samarth and his actress wife Shobhna in a Marathi Hindu Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu family. Tanuja and Chatura, both actresses, were her sisters, and she had a brother named Jaideep.
Nutan attended St. Joseph’s Convent School in Panchgani before moving to Switzerland in 1953 to complete his education. Following the failure of her films, she was moved there at her mother’s request. She called the year she spent there “the happiest of my life.”
