Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar (1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare (1951), and Sanam (1951) were their seven films together, all of which were box office successes. Suraiya was always listed first in the credits in these films, indicating that she was a bigger star than Anand.

She fell in love with him while filming the song Kinare Kinare Chale Jayen Ge from Vidya; the boat they were in capsized during the sequence, and Anand saved Suraiya from drowning.

Suraiya’s family used to welcome Dev Anand into their home, but when her maternal grandmother discovered that the two were in love and even planning a wedding on the set of Jeet, she began to keep an eye on them.

They exchanged love letters and messages through their co-stars, such as Durga Khote and Kamini Kaushal, who went to great lengths to arrange covert encounters.

During the filming of Afsar (1950), Anand eventually proposed to Suraiya and presented her with a Rs 3,000 diamond ring. Suraiya remained unmarried since her maternal grandmother rejected the romance because they were Muslim and Anand was Hindu.

They quit acting together after her grandmother objected to their collaboration, and Do Sitare was their final picture together. Despite the fact that the films he starred in alongside Suraiya were successful, the producers and directors of those films credited Suraiya’s acting talent and screen presence with their success.

Anand began seeking for a role as the major male protagonist in a film where he could demonstrate his acting ability in order to eliminate doubts about his acting abilities.
