Biography of Prithviraj Kapoor
Early life and education
Kapoor was born on November 3, 1906, in Samundri, Samundri Tehsil, Lyallpur District, Punjab, British India, to a Khatri Punjabi Hindu family.
His grandfather, Keshavmal Kapoor, was a Tehsildar in Samundri, and his father, Basheshwarnath Kapoor, was a police officer in the Indian Imperial Police in Peshawar. Kapoor spent much of his childhood at Lyallpur, where his grandparents and extended family resided.
His father was later transferred to Peshawar, and the family moved there after a few years while keeping their home and belongings in Lyallpur.
Kapoor attended Khalsa College Lyallpur, which is now known as Government Municipal Degree College in Faisalabad, and Edwardes College in Peshawar.

Personal life
Kapoor was 17 years old when he married Ramsarni Mehra, a 15-year-old girl from his own village with a similar upbringing, in a traditional Indian match arranged by their parents. The marriage was happy and traditional, and it lasted for the rest of their lives.
In truth, Ramsarni’s wedding had taken place a few years before, and it was the Gauna ceremony (farewell) that was held when she turned 15 and became old enough to leave her parents and live with her husband and in-laws. Jugal Kishore Mehra, Ramsarni’s brother, would eventually star in films.
In December 1924, the couple’s eldest child, Raj Kapoor, was born, making Prithviraj a father at the age of 18. Prithviraj and his wife had three children by the time he came to Mumbai in 1927. Ramsarni joined Prithviraj in Mumbai in 1930.
Two of their kids died in one tragic week the next year, while she was pregnant for the fourth time. Devinder (nicknamed Devi) died of double pneumonia, while Ravinder (nicknamed Binder or Bindie) died of poisoning after swallowing rat poison pills left about the yard.
The marriage had three more children: Shamsher Raj (Shammi) and Balbir Raj (Shashi), both of whom went on to become well-known actors and directors in their own right, and Urmila Sial, a daughter.
