Amrish Lal Puri was born to Lala Nihal Chand and Ved Kaur in Nawanshahr, Punjab. Chaman Puri and Madan Puri (both actors) were his older brothers, Chandrakanta was his older sister, and Harish Puri was his younger brother. K. L. Saigal, an actor and singer, was his first cousin.
