Bharat Bhushan was born on June 14, 1920, in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, to a Vaishya (Baniya) family. Raibahadur Motilal, his father, was the government pleader of Meerut.
When he was two years old, his mother died. Ramesh Chandra, his older brother, was a film producer who operated the Ideal Studio in Lucknow. Following their mother’s death, the brothers travelled to Aligarh to live with their grandfather.
He studied at Dharam Samaj College in Aligarh and graduated with a master’s degree. Following that, he began acting against his father’s desires. He first travelled to Calcutta to work in the film industry before settling in Bombay.

“In Hindi movies, he depicts historical and mythological characters the finest,” says current actor and producer Chandrashekar. For shows like Barsat Ki Raat, Nayi Umar Ki Nayi Fasal, Basant Bahar, and Dooj Ka Chand, he authored screenplays and stories.
Dooj Ka Chand was his production. R. Chandra, his brother, directed a number of films, including Bebus, Minar, and Basant Bahar.
In 1954, he won the second Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. On him were portrayed most of the best songs of major vocalists of the time, such as Rafi, Manna Dey, Talat, and Mukesh.
He was Hindi cinema’s first chocolate-faced good-looking star. He was one of the few performers with a decent sense of music, therefore most music-based films of the 1950s and 1960s featured him in leading parts.
Until the 1990s, he worked as an actor in Hindi films. Despite personal tragedies and intense competition from his contemporaries, he is still adored and revered by Indians for the excellent movies and great songs he produced. He is regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars and legends.
Sarla, the daughter of Zamindar Raibahadur Budha Prakash, married into a renowned Meerut family. Anuradha and Aparajita were their two daughters. Anuradha suffered from polio sequelae. Aparajita, his other daughter, played Mandodari in Ramanand Sagar’s acclaimed serial Ramayan.

His daughter Aparajita claimed in an interview that after her husband died suddenly, she turned to acting. Aparajita has appeared in over 50 films and television series.
Bhushan had a bungalow in Bombay’s Bandra neighbourhood. He was an ardent reader with a beautiful library, which he had to sell off in poor times, along with his vehicles and bungalows, after he became a co-producer at his brother’s request.
