Meenakshi Seshadri was born in Sindri, Bihar, as Shashikala Seshadri to a Tamil Brahmin family. Vempati Chinna Satyam and Jaya Rama Rao taught her Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, and Odissi, four Indian classical dance genres.
