Early and personal life
Shroff was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, as Jai Kishan Kakubhai Shroff. Kakubhai Haribhai Shroff, his Gujarati father, and his mother, a Turkmen from Kazakhstan, were his parents. When a coup occurred in Kazakhstan, his maternal grandmother fled to Ladakh with her seven daughters. They relocated to Delhi and then Mumbai.
His father was born into a Gujarati merchant and commercial family. However, they lost all of their money in the stock market, forcing his father to leave home when he was 17 years old. When he and his mother were both teenagers, they met and married.
