Primary source of Amjad Khan Net worth (Acting)
Salim Khan, one of the film’s authors, offered him the role of dacoit Gabbar Singh in the film Sholay in 1975. Amjad read Abhishapth Chambal, a novel on Chambal dacoits written by Taroon Kumar Bhaduri (actor Jaya Bhaduri’s father), in preparation for the role.
The film catapulted Amjad to stardom. His mannerisms and phrases have become part of the Bollywood vernacular, inspiring a slew of parodies and spoofs [particularly “Soja Nahi to Gabbar Ajayega”].
Sholay went on to become a box office smash hit. Despite a stellar cast that included Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, and Sanjeev Kumar, who was nominated for a Filmfare award for Best Actor that year, Amjad stole the show with his unorthodox and creepy dialogue delivery. His dialogues and demeanour are remembered warmly even today.
He later appeared in ads as Gabbar Singh, endorsing Britannia Glucose Biscuits (also known as Gabbar Ki Asli Pasand), marking the first time a villain was employed to promote a popular product.
Khan continued to perform negative characters in numerous future Hindi films in the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s, surpassing the earlier Indian actor, Ajit, in terms of popularity and demand.

He frequently played the villain alongside Amitabh Bachchan, who played the hero. His character in Inkaar was likewise frighteningly depicted. Des Pardes, Nastik, Satte Pe Satta, Chambal Ki Kasam, Ganga Ki Saugandh, Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, and Naseeb all featured him.
Other works
Khan was also known for playing a variety of unusual roles. Khan starred as Wajid Ali Shah, a powerless and misguided monarch whose kingdom, Avadh, is being attacked by British colonialists from the British East India Company, in the highly acclaimed film Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977) (based on the novel of the same name) directed by Satyajit Ray. He dubbed a song for the first time in this film.
In the 1979 film Meera, he played Emperor Akbar. He had a number of positive parts, including Amitabh’s buddy and father in Yaarana (1981) and Laawaris (1981), Rocky (1981), and Commander (1981).
He played Vatsayana, the author of the Kama Sutra, in the art film Utsav (1984). He played an underworld don in Merchant Ivory’s English-language thriller The Perfect Murder in 1988.
In films like Qurbani (1980), Love Story, and Chameli Ki Shaadi, he excelled at playing comedic roles (1986). In 1991, he reprised his role as Gabbar Singh in Ramgarh Ke Sholay, a parody of the classic film starring Dev Anand and Amitabh Bachchan, in which he was joined by lookalikes of Dev Anand and Amitabh Bachchan.
In the 1980s, he dabbled in directing, directing and acting in Chor Police (1983), which bombed at the box office, and Ameer Aadmi Gareeb Aadmi (1985), which was a box office smash.
Amjad was the Actors Guild Association’s president. He was well-liked in the industry and would step in to mediate and resolve conflicts between actors and directors/producers.
One such disagreement occurred when Raj Kumar Santoshi pushed Meenakshi Seshadri to withdraw out of Damini (1993) after she refused his proposal. Amjad Khan was able to resolve the situation and have Raj Santoshi retract his severe verdict.
Personal life
He married Shaila Khan in 1972, and their first kid, Shadaab Khan, was born the following year. Ahlam Khan was his daughter, and Seemaab Khan was his son. In 2011, Ahlam married Zafar Karachiwala, a well-known theatre actor.
