Salim Khan, one of the film’s authors, offered him the role of dacoit Gabbar Singh in the film Sholay in 1975. Amjad read Abhishapth Chambal, a novel on Chambal dacoits written by Taroon Kumar Bhaduri (actor Jaya Bhaduri’s father), in preparation for the role.

The film catapulted Amjad to stardom. His mannerisms and phrases have become part of the Bollywood vernacular, inspiring a slew of parodies and spoofs [particularly “Soja Nahi to Gabbar Ajayega”].

Sholay went on to become a box office smash hit. Despite a stellar cast that included Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, and Sanjeev Kumar, who was nominated for a Filmfare award for Best Actor that year, Amjad stole the show with his unorthodox and creepy dialogue delivery. His dialogues and demeanour are remembered warmly even today.

He later appeared in ads as Gabbar Singh, endorsing Britannia Glucose Biscuits (also known as Gabbar Ki Asli Pasand), marking the first time a villain was employed to promote a popular product.
