Early life
Shashi Kapoor was born on March 18, 1938, in Calcutta, British India, as Balbir Raj Kapoor to Prithviraj Kapoor and his wife. Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor were his younger brothers.
While travelling with Prithvi Theatres, Kapoor acted in plays directed and produced by his father, Prithviraj Kapoor. He began appearing in films as a youngster in the late 1940s under the name Shashiraj, as there was already another actor with the same name who had previously worked as a child artiste in mythological films.

His most well-known roles as a child actor were in Aag (1948) and Awaara (1951), in which he played the younger version of his older brother Raj Kapoor’s characters, and in Sangram (1950), in which he played the younger version of Ashok Kumar, and Dana Paani (1953), in which he co-starred with Bharat Bhushan. From 1948 through 1954, he appeared in four Hindi films as a kid actor.

Jennifer was Geoffrey Kendal’s daughter, and Geoffrey’s Shakespearean troupe was also in Calcutta at the same time. Following their subsequent meeting, the pair fell in love and married in July 1958, despite initial opposition from the Kendals and encouragement from sister-in-law Geeta Bali. They appeared together in a number of films, most notably Merchant-Ivory movies.
