Early life
Amrita Singh was born on February 9, 1958, to Rukhsana Sultana and a Punjabi Sikh father, army commander Sardar Shivinder Singh Virk, from an aristocratic family with roots dating back to Sikh hero Bhai Sangat Singh in the 17th century.
During the Indian Emergency in the 1970s, her mother was a political associate of Sanjay Gandhi, and she acquired prominence for leading Sanjay Gandhi’s sterilising effort in Muslim neighbourhoods of Old Delhi.

Amrita is the great-granddaughter of Sobha Singh, one of New Delhi’s builders, the grandniece of late novelist Khushwant Singh, and the great-grandniece of politician Ujjal Singh, through her paternal grandmother Mohinder Kaur.
Her great-aunt was actress Begum Para, and her spouse was Dilip Kumar’s brother, Nasir Khan. Her uncle is actor Ayub Khan. Singh was a childhood friend of Shah Rukh Khan. Singh went to the same school as Khan’s sister, Shahnaz, and their mothers regularly worked together in the Old Delhi region.
