He was born in Shrirampur, Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, India, on October 8, 1978, to parents Zakia and Bakhtiyar Khan. He was born into a Muslim Marathi family. He has two brothers: Zeeshan, his older brother, and Anees, his younger brother.

He began his training with Utsav Yadav. Zaheer went to Shrirampur’s New Marathi Primary School and K.J. Somaiyya Secondary School. After playing for the local Revenue Colony Cricket Club (RCC) in Shrirampur, he moved to Pune to further his profession.
