Sunil Gavaskar was born in Mumbai to a middle-class Marathi family and attended St Xavier’s High School. While playing for his school, he was voted India’s Best Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in 1966.
In his final year of secondary school, he scored 246*, 222, and 85 runs in school cricket before hitting a century against the visiting London schoolboys.

In the third Test in Georgetown, Guyana, he scored 116 and 64, while at the fourth Test in Bridgetown, Barbados, he scored 1 and 117. He returned to Trinidad for the fifth Test, scoring 124 and 220 runs to help India win its first and only series against the West Indies till 2006.
After Doug Walters, he became the second player in Test history to score a century and a double century in the same match, and he remains the only Indian to do it to this day.
He also became the first Indian to achieve four centuries in a single Test series, the second Indian to record two centuries in the same Test after Vijay Hazare, and the third Indian to hit hundreds in three successive innings after Hazare and Polly Umrigar.
