Childhood and early life
Federer was born in Basel, Switzerland, on August 8, 1981. Robert Federer, his Swiss-German father, hails from Berneck in the Canton of St. Gallen, and Lynette Federer, his Afrikaner mother, hails from Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa.
Diana, his older sister and the mother of twins, is his only sibling. Federer is a dual nationality of Switzerland and South Africa because his mother is a South African.
He grew up on the French and German borders in adjacent Birsfelden, Riehen, and finally Münchenstein, and speaks fluent Swiss German, Standard German, English, and French, as well as functional Italian and Swedish.
