Life and education
Chopra was born in Lahore on September 23, 1935, as the third of six children to Punjabi Hindu parents Ranbir Lal and Rooprani Chopra. Following India’s partition, his family relocated to Simla (now Shimla), where he grew up.
He attended Shimla’s S.D. Senior Secondary School. His father wished for him to become a doctor or an officer in the Indian Administrative Services.

Chopra attended Shimla for his schooling and college after his father, a government employee, was transferred there. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Panjab University. He was an avid participant in campus dramas.
He completed his graduation at his father’s request and then moved to Bombay (present-day Mumbai). His mother was afflicted with oral cancer shortly after he filmed his debut picture, and she died, leaving his father and four older siblings to care for his then nine-year-old sister Anju.
