Nutan was born on June 4, 1936, as the eldest of four children of director-poet Kumarsen Samarth and his actress wife Shobhna in a Marathi Hindu Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu family. Tanuja and Chatura, both actresses, were her sisters, and she had a brother named Jaideep.
