Early life
Mammootty was born in Chandiroor on September 7, 1951. He was born into a middle-class Muslim family in the hamlet of Chempu near Vaikom in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India.

Ismail, his father, ran a wholesale clothing and rice business and was also a rice farmer. Fatima, his mother, was a stay-at-home mom.
He was the oldest of their children. Ibrahimkutty and Zakariah are his younger brothers, and Ameena, Sauda, and Shafina are his younger sisters.

For his elementary schooling, he attended Government High School in Kulasekharamangalam, Kottayam. His father relocated the family to Ernakulam in the 1960s, and he attended Government School Ernakulam.

Mammootty made his acting debut in the film Anubhavangal Paalichakal, directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan, in 1971 as a junior artist.
