Pathan was born on October 27, 1984, in Baroda, Gujarat, India. He is of Pashtun (Pathan) origin and is a member of the Gujarat Pathan community.
In a destitute household, he grew up in a mosque in Vadodara with his older brother Yusuf. His father was the muezzin at the time.
Pathan and his brother were interested in cricket despite their parents’ wishes for them to become Islamic academics.
Their father regularly had to apologise to Muslim worshippers who came to the mosque because of their games on the grounds outside and inside.
