Early life
Mammootty was born in Chandiroor on September 7, 1951. He was born into a middle-class Muslim family in the hamlet of Chempu near Vaikom in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India.

Ismail, his father, ran a wholesale clothing and rice business and was also a rice farmer. Fatima, his mother, was a stay-at-home mom.

For his elementary schooling, he attended Government High School in Kulasekharamangalam, Kottayam. His father relocated the family to Ernakulam in the 1960s, and he attended Government School Ernakulam.
