Early life and family

Begum Zohra Mumtazullah Khan was born in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, on April 27, 1912. His parents were Mumtazullah Khan and Natiqua Begum. She was the third of seven children born to a traditional Muslim family in Chakrata (now Uttarakhand): Zakullah, Hajrah, Ikramullah, Uzra (Uzra Butt), Anna, and Sabira.

Sehgal characterised herself as a tomboy who loves playing outside and climbing trees. When she was one, she developed glaucoma and lost eyesight in her left eye. She was referred to a Birmingham hospital, where she was treated for £300.
