Biography of Zohra Sehgal
Early life and family
Begum Zohra Mumtazullah Khan was born in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, on April 27, 1912. His parents were Mumtazullah Khan and Natiqua Begum. She was the third of seven children born to a traditional Muslim family in Chakrata (now Uttarakhand): Zakullah, Hajrah, Ikramullah, Uzra (Uzra Butt), Anna, and Sabira.
Sehgal characterised herself as a tomboy who loves playing outside and climbing trees. When she was one, she developed glaucoma and lost eyesight in her left eye. She was referred to a Birmingham hospital, where she was treated for £300.
Sehgal and her sisters were enrolled at Queen Mary College in Lahore after their mother died when they were young. At the institute, strict purdah was followed, and males who were invited to conduct lectures and seminars could only do so from behind a screen.
Sehgal chose against getting married after seeing her sister’s unsuccessful marriage. Her maternal uncle, Sahebzada Saeeduzzafar Khan, located in Edinburgh, arranged for her to apprentice under a British actress once she graduated.
They set out by automobile from Lahore, passing through Iran and Palestine before arriving in Damascus, Syria, where she met her cousin. They then journeyed to Egypt, where they boarded a ship to Europe in Alexandria.
Sehgal’s aunt urged her to join Mary Wigman’s dance school in Dresden, Germany, when she was in Europe. Sehgal passed the entrance exam despite having little prior expertise with the dance style and became the institution’s first Indian student. She spent the next three years in Dresden, studying modern dance and residing at Countess Liebenstein’s home.
When she met Uday Shankar at a performance of the Shiv-Parvati dance, which he choreographed, it was a watershed moment in her life. Shankar promised her a job after she finished her education and returned to India.

The band went on tour in Japan, Egypt, Europe, and the United States. Along with Simkin, a French national, Sehgal quickly established herself as the troupe’s principal dancer.
Sehgal became a teacher at the Uday Shankar India Cultural Centre in Almora after they returned to India in 1940. She met her future husband, Kameshwar Sehgal, an eight-year-younger scientist, painter, and dancer from Indore who belonged to the Radha Soami sect.

They continued to work at the Cultural Centre and became well-known choreographers. Kameshwar Sehgal composed a well-known ballet for human puppets and choreographed the ballet Lotus Dance during their time in Almora.
Later, the pair moved to Lahore, where they founded the Zohresh Dancing Institute, their own dance school. They came to Bombay with their one-year-old daughter Kiran following the communal tensions that preceded India’s partition.
Sehgal began her career as an actor with the Prithvi Theatre (where her sister, Uzra Butt, also performed) in 1945, earning a monthly salary of Rs 400 and touring around India with the company.
Sehgal also joined the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) in 1945, starred in various plays, and made her film debut in IPTA’s first film production, Dharti Ke Lal, directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, in 1946; she followed it up with another IPTA-supported film, Neecha Nagar, in 1947.
Neecha Nagar, directed by Chetan Anand and starring Rafiq Ahmed and Uma Anand, was one of the first parallel cinema productions in the subcontinent. The film was a critical triumph upon its premiere, and it was screened at major film festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or.
Return to India
In the mid-1990s, Sehgal returned to India and spent a few months in Burdwan. She appeared in a number of films, plays, and television programmes at the time. She first recited poetry in 1983 at a memorial for Uday Shankar organised by his brother, Ravi Shankar, and quickly became enamoured with it.
She was soon invited to perform poetry at numerous events. She went to Pakistan to recite the lines “An Evening With Zohra.” Her spontaneous Punjabi and Urdu performances became the norm. Audiences frequently asked her to recite Hafeez Jullundhri’s popular nazm, Abhi To Main Jawan Hoon, after her stage performances.
Despite her father’s initial reservations, Sehgal married Hindu Kameshwar Sehgal. The wedding took place on August 14, 1942, and Jawaharlal Nehru was supposed to attend the celebration, but he had been detained a few days before for supporting Gandhi’s Quit India Movement.
Kiran Segal, an Odissi dancer, and Pavan Sehgal, a WHO employee, are Sehgal’s children. Kiran Segal wrote Zohra Sehgal: Fatty, her mother’s biography, which was published in 2012.
She was hospitalised at the Max Hospital in South Delhi on July 9, 2014, after being diagnosed with pneumonia. She died of heart arrest on July 10, 2014, at the age of 102.
On Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Sehgal, calling her “prolific & full of life” and said she “made a mark via her acting, which is adored across generations.” Amitabh Bachchan, who also paid tribute, said Sehgal was “immensely loving.”
On July 11, Sehgal was cremated at the Lodhi Road crematorium in Delhi. She had specified that she wanted to be cremated and buried without a fuss or complications after she died and that her ashes should be flushed down the toilet if the Crematory refused to hold them.
