Banu began working on her first Hindi film when she was 16 years old, in 1960. In an interview, she stated that she possessed basic talent and had minimal dancing experience.
Her competitors were all traditionally trained, which is why she wasn’t placed in the top division. Banu began taking Kathak and Bharata Natyam courses and trained professionally as a result. She became a dancer soon after, and more of her dancing appeared in her films.
