Early life

Carole Penny Marshall was born on October 15, 1943, in the Bronx, New York City, to Marjorie Irene, a tap dance teacher and owner of the Marjorie Marshall Dance School, and Anthony “Tony” Masciarelli, subsequently Anthony Wallace Marshall, an industrial film director and eventually a producer. She was the younger sister of actor/director/TV producer Garry Marshall and television producer Ronny Hallin.

Carole was chosen as her birth name since Carole Lombard was her mother’s favorite actress. Her mother chose her second name in an attempt to pacify her older sister Ronny, who was collecting her pennies in the Bronx in order to get a horse.

She directed many episodes of Michael Keaton and James Belushi’s short-lived sitcom Working Stiffs in 1979. She quickly moved on to big pictures, with Peggy Sue Got Married is her debut (which at that point was scheduled to star Debra Winger in the leading role).

However, due to creative disputes between Marshall and the film’s writers, Marshall quit the production, and Winger also left out of loyalty to Marshall. Marshall was immediately granted the directing assignment for Whoopi Goldberg’s Jumpin’ Jack Flash (1986).

When the original director bowed out, she was offered the job. Tracy and her brother Garry were also cast as characters in the film. Marshall compared the transition to directing to “cramming four years of college into one semester,” demonstrating the difficulty of learning.
