Caryn Elaine Johnson was born on November 13, 1955, in Manhattan, New York City, to Robert James Johnson Jr. (1930–1993), a Baptist minister, and Emma Johnson, a nurse, and teacher. She grew up in the Chelsea-Elliot Houses public housing project in New York City.
