Early life and background

Nargis was born Fatima Rashid into a Punjabi Muslim family in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India (now Kolkata, West Bengal, India). Abdul Rashid, formerly known as Mohanchand Uttamchand (“Mohan Babu”), was a wealthy Punjabi Hindu heir from Rawalpindi who converted to Islam.

Jaddanbai, a Hindustani classical music vocalist and one of India’s early film pioneers, was her mother. Nargis’ family then relocated from Punjab to Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad. Nargis was introduced to the Indian film culture at the time by her. Anwar Hussain, Nargis’ maternal half-brother, was also a cinema performer.

Early films and debuts

When she was six years old, Fatima made her debut cinematic appearance as Baby Nargis in the 1935 film Talashe Haq. Nargis is a Persian word that refers to the daffodil blossom Narcissus. In all of her later films, she was credited as Nargis.

Following her debut, Nargis featured in a number more films. She made her acting debut in Mehboob Khan’s Taqdeer in 1943, when she was 14 years old, opposite Motilal. The movie was a box office hit, and she received a lot of accolades for her portrayal.

After Taqdeer, Nargis participated in the 1945 historical drama Humayun, starring Ashok Kumar, the prominent actor of the time. The picture had a mediocre box office performance.

Mela, Anokha Pyar, and Aag, all released in 1948, were among her early films. The first two films had her alongside Dilip Kumar, while the third was her first time working with Raj Kapoor. Except for Mela, which was one of the year’s highest-grossing films, none of her films did well in 1948.

Raj Kapoor was captivated by Nargis’ onscreen charisma and presence following the success of Andaz and Barsaat. As a result, he cast her as a character in Awaara (1951). Despite the fact that the storey is centred around a father and his estranged son, Nargis had a significant role in the film as a lawyer who knows the truth about Raj (Kapoor) and Raghunath (Prithviraj Kapoor)

Nargis played an outspoken woman-lawyer who chastised those who see women as “things intended for household chores,” in contrast to other actresses of the time. In a scene from Awaara, she was also seen wearing swimsuits, which was a rather daring outfit for an Indian woman at the time.

It became the highest-grossing film of all time in India, grossing $12.55 million, shattering the previous record set by Barsaat. Another blockbuster in Nargis’ filmography was Deedar, which was released the same year.
