Early life
On May 21, 1960, Mohanlal Viswanathan was born in the hamlet of Elanthoor in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.

He is the youngest child of Viswanathan Nair, a former Kerala government employee and Law Secretary, and Santhakumari.
Pyarelal, his older brother, was his only sibling (died in 2000, during a military exercise). At his paternal house in Thiruvananthapuram, Mohanlal grew up at Mudavanmugal.

He attended Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram and graduated from Mahatma Gandhi College in Thiruvananthapuram with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
