Early life
Lee Marvin was born in New York City to advertising executive Lamont Waltman Marvin and fashion writer Courtenay Washington. He was named after Civil War Confederate General Robert E. Lee, who was his first cousin four times removed, as was his elder brother, Robert (1922–1999).
His father was a direct descendant of Matthew Marvin Sr., who helped create Hartford, Connecticut in 1635 after emigrating from Great Bentley, Essex, England. Marvin used to play the violin when he was younger.

On August 12, 1942, Marvin quit school at the age of 18 to join the United States Marine Corps Reserve. During WWII, he was a member of the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific Theater.
He was injured in battle on June 18, 1944, while serving with “I” Battalion, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, during the Battle of Saipan’s assault on Mount Tapochau, during which most of his company was killed.

Marvin was issued a medical release with the rank of private first class after more than a year of medical treatment in naval facilities.
