Early life
Karthi was born Karthik Sivakumar in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India, on May 25, 1977.
Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, both in Chennai, were his primary and secondary schools.
Crescent Engineering College in Chennai awarded him a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
He worked as an engineering consultant in Chennai after graduation and considered further study abroad.

Karthi’s character was described as “a sophisticated posh elegant guy…” Selvaraghavan abandoned that project in July 2007 and announced the development of Aayirathil Oruvan, an action-adventure film starring Karthi. Filming started later that year and was set to wrap in February 2008.
The film was scheduled to be released in mid-2008, however, production was delayed, and filming lasted until early 2009.
In September 2007, he accepted to take the lead role in Linguswamy’s upcoming film, Paiyaa. Paiyaa was often postponed due to the poor completion of Aayirathil Oruvan.

Producer R.Ravindran complained to Karthi during the filming of Aayirathil Oruvan that he was trying to change his look and go on to Paiyaa before finishing his commitments.

Actor Sivakumar and his wife Lakshmi have a son named Karthi. Karthi has two siblings: an older brother, Suriya, who was already a well-known actor when he made his film debut, and a younger sister, Brindha, who works as a Tamil film singer. Karthi’s sister-in-law is Tamil actress Jyothika.
Karthi married Ranjani Chinnasamy, a Stella Maris College graduate with a master’s degree in English literature, on July 3, 2011.
They were married in a traditional Kongu ceremony at the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex in Coimbatore on April 29, 2011, in Ranjani’s hometown of Goundampalayam in Erode district.
