Professional expansion
Ranaut returned to the film after a year away, playing Julia, a 1940s heroine and stuntwoman in Vishal Bhardwaj’s romantic comedy Rangoon (2017), alongside Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor.
Ranaut, who was inspired by Fearless Nadia, portrayed the character as an “amalgamation of numerous people” from the era, and was particularly captivated by the “fierceness and sensuality” she discovered in her. She learned to ride a horse and fight with a sword, and she did all of her own stunts.
Simran, a crime comedy directed by Hansal Mehta in which Ranaut played a Gujarati immigrant in America embroiled in criminal activities, was released the same year.
For improvising some sentences on set, she shared screenplay credit with Apurva Asrani, however, Asrani accused Ranaut and Mehta of undervaluing his contributions to the script. The film received mediocre reviews and was a commercial failure once again.

During a chat show appearance in 2017, Ranaut had a public spat with filmmaker Karan Johar, accusing him of nepotism.
