Breakthrough years
Kumar went on to star in a number of film office hits in the 1950s, including Jogan, Babul, Deedar, Tarana, and many others. Several of these flicks cemented his reputation as the “Tragedy King” on screen. Kumar briefly suffered from depression as a result of playing so many tragic characters, so he switched to light-hearted roles at the suggestion of his therapist.
Mehboob Khan’s big-budget swashbuckling musical Aan, released in 1952, featured him in one of his first lighter roles and was his first technicolour film. With a grandiose premiere in London, Aan became the first Indian film to get a wide release across Europe.

Mughal-e-Azam and venture into production
He starred as Prince Salim in K. Asif’s big-budget epic historical picture Mughal-e-Azam, which held the record for the highest-grossing Indian film for 11 years until it was overtaken by Sholay in 1975. Mughal-e-Azam was the highest-earning Indian film until the early 2010s, when it was adjusted for inflation, grossing over 1000 crore.
Directorial debut and final works
In the action-thriller Izzatdaar, he starred alongside Govinda. In 1991, Kumar co-starred in Saudagar with legendary actor Raaj Kumar, his third and final collaboration with director Subhash Ghai. After 1959’s Paigham, this was his second collaboration with Raaj Kumar.
Kumar’s last and final box office hit was Saudagar. For his services to the industry, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994.
Personal life
During the filming of Tarana, Kumar fell in love with Madhubala. They were together for seven years until Kumar testified against Madhubala and her father in the Naya Daur court case, which ended their romance. After Mughal-e-Azam, they never worked together again.
Vyjayanthimala was associated with Kumar by gossip magazines in the late 1950s, and Kumar has performed with her more than any other actress, resulting in excellent on-screen chemistry between them. Kumar reportedly handpicked the shade of sari that Vyjayanthimala will wear in every scene while shooting on his home production Gunga Jumna.

Kumar was slated to star alongside Ajay Devgan and Priyanka Chopra in the film Asar – The Impact, but it was shelved due to Kumar’s deteriorating health. He was also set to star alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan in Subhash Ghai’s war picture Mother Land, but Khan opted to drop out of the project, and the film was shelved.
