Norris was born on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, to Wilma and Ray Dee Norris, a World War II Army soldier, mechanic, bus driver, and truck driver, respectively. Norris has claimed to have Irish and Cherokee ancestors. Norris was named after his father’s preacher, Carlos Berry.
