Colonel Thomas West Hammond, Jr. and his wife Eileen Hammond gave birth to Hammond in Washington, D.C. While Hammond’s father was a US citizen and a US Army commander, his mother was English and had been in the 1942 film Much Too Shy. David Hammond is Hammond’s older brother (b. 1946).
During World War II, Hammond’s parents met and married in London, where his father was stationed. After the war, the couple permanently relocated to the United States, and because the Colonel worked for the army, the family traveled around a lot during Hammond’s upbringing.
