Early life
Annu Kapoor was born on February 20, 1956, in Itwara, Bhopal, Bhopal State, to Madanlal, a Punjabi father, and Kamal, a Bengali Brahmin mother. His father was the owner of a travelling Parsi theatre troupe that played in cities and towns, while his mother was an Urdu instructor and classical singer.
His great-grandpa Lala Ganga Ram Kapoor was a revolutionary who was executed during the Indian freedom struggle, and his grandfather Kripa Ram Kapoor was a doctor in the British Army.

He had to drop out of school after secondary school due to financial constraints. His mother worked as a teacher and earned a salary of $40. He joined his theatre company at his father’s request. Following a stint there, he enrolled in the National School of Drama in 1976, on the advice of his brother Ranjit Kapoor, who was also a student there.
He played a 70-year-old guy in the play Ek Ruka Hua Faisla in Bombay in 1981, after graduating from the National School of Drama and a brief stay with its repertory company. After seeing Kapoor perform, film director Shyam Benegal wrote him a letter of commendation and signed him for his 1983 film Mandi.
