In the 2017 Indian Premier League season, he was a member of the Delhi Daredevils cricket team.
He is one of the most sought-after players in the Premier League, having been purchased for US$950,000 by the Pune Warriors.
Mathews began his international career in late 2008 with the goal of becoming a true allrounder, but he has subsequently prioritised his batting (in order to reduce his workload and avoid injuries) and now plays as a specialist batsman on the Test side.
In limited-overs cricket, he continues to play as a batting allrounder for the sake of the team. With an above-average strike rate of 84.06, he has emerged as a dangerous threat in the final overs of Sri Lanka’s innings.
After Kumar Sangakkara stood down as ODI captain after the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, Mathews was generally expected to take over as Sri Lanka’s limited-overs captain.
Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene, however, only served for a brief time. Jayawardene stood down as captain of the T20I team after Sri Lanka’s loss in the final of the 2012 ICC World Twenty20.
Mathews was named T20I captain later that month, with Lasith Malinga as his deputy. Mathews was selected ODI and Test captain in February 2013, following Jayawardene.
On July 7, 2021, Mathews announced that he is considering retiring from international cricket in all formats because he had not signed a tour contract with SLC for the limited-overs series against India, and he had complained about the management’s unethical treatment of the senior players in the team.
His departure stems mostly from a financial issue with the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, as well as SLC’s plans to cut numerous senior players from the national squad in limited-overs contests in order to develop and give opportunities to new players ahead of the 2023 World Cup.
Mathews is the son of Tamil father Tyronne Mathews and Burgher mother Monica Mathews and was born in Colombo. Mathews is a Roman Catholic who attended Colombo’s St. Joseph’s College.
Heshanie Silva, Mathews’ lifelong partner, is his wife. Former President Mahinda Rajapakse attended the wedding celebration on July 18, 2013, at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel. They have two girls and one boy.
He indicated in July 2021 that he was interested in taking on a big role in finding donors for a social welfare project called “Little Hearts,” which is also a national fundraising drive to create a Cardiac and Critical Care Complex at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo.
After witnessing how the physicians and nurses handled his daughter while she was admitted to LRH hospital for illness, he was inspired to participate in the Little Hearts fundraiser.
