Mela, Anokha Pyar, and Aag, all released in 1948, were among her early films. The first two films had her alongside Dilip Kumar, while the third was her first time working with Raj Kapoor. Except for Mela, which was one of the year’s highest-grossing films, none of her films did well in 1948.
Primary source of Nargis Net worth (Acting)
Along with Dilip Kumar, Nargis played the lead parts in the 1950 films Jogan and Babul. Both films were box office successes, with her performance in Babul garnering particular praise.
Raj Kapoor was captivated by Nargis’ onscreen charisma and presence following the success of Andaz and Barsaat. As a result, he cast her as a character in Awaara (1951). Despite the fact that the storey is centred around a father and his estranged son, Nargis had a significant role in the film as a lawyer who knows the truth about Raj (Kapoor) and Raghunath (Prithviraj Kapoor)
Nargis played an outspoken woman-lawyer who chastised those who see women as “things intended for household chores,” in contrast to other actresses of the time. In a scene from Awaara, she was also seen wearing swimsuits, which was a rather daring outfit for an Indian woman at the time.
The film was premiered on December 14, 1951, and Prithviraj, Raj, and Nargis received worldwide acclaim for their roles. The film was a box office success not only in India but also internationally, with Nargis and Raj becoming household names in places such as Greece and the United States.
It became the highest-grossing film of all time in India, grossing $12.55 million, shattering the previous record set by Barsaat. Another blockbuster in Nargis’ filmography was Deedar, which was released the same year.
Career setbacks
Nargis’ films, which were released between 1952 and 1954, did not do well critically or economically. She had as many as six releases in 1952, with only Anhonee being a hit. In 1953 and 1954, she appeared in five films, none of which were box office successes. Her 1953 picture Aah, on the other hand, has become a cult classic over the years.
Reigning years
With Raj Kapoor’s social drama Shree 420, Nargis resurrected her career (1955). The film was the highest-grossing film of all time and contained a number of well-known songs.
She teamed up with Kapoor again for the box office hit Chori Chori (1956), which follows a girl (Nargis) who flees her home to marry a gold digger pilot (Pran), but instead falls in love with a news reporter (Kapoor) she encounters on a bus. She had a cameo role in Kapoor’s Jagte Raho the same year. Raj Kapoor was her final co-star in the film.

In 1957, she received the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in Mehboob Khan’s Oscar-nominated epic drama Mother India, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. In 1957, she appeared in the Indo-Soviet co-production Pardesi (marketed as Journey Beyond Three Seas in English).
Films with Raj Kapoor
Awaara, Shree 420, Jagte Raho (cameo), Andaz, Chori Chori, Aah, Aag, and Barsaat were among the 16 films in which Nargis and Raj Kapoor collaborated over a ten-year period. In 1948, they made their debut picture together, Aag.
Songs from these films featuring them have become well-known. The couple’s work in Awaara made them famous all over the world, especially in the Soviet Union, where the film was dubbed in Russian and released as Brodiaga.
Later career
Nargis put up her cinema career after her marriage to Sunil Dutt in 1958, and when her last few pictures were released, she decided to settle down with her family. She made her final film appearance in 1967’s Raat Aur Din, after being persuaded to act after a fifteen-year hiatus.
The film was well-received, and Nargis’ portrayal of a lady suffering from dissociative identity disorder was praised. She earned the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role, making her the first actress to do so. She was also nominated for a Filmfare Best Actress Award for this film.
She was also elected to the Rajya Sabha (Indian Parliament’s upper house) from 1980 to 1981, however, she died of cancer during her term.
Personal life
Actor Raj Kapoor, with whom Nargis co-starred in the films Awaara and Shree 420, had a long-term romance. Raj Kapoor was a married man with a family. Nargis broke their nine-year romance as he refused to divorce his wife.
On March 11, 1958, Nargis married actor Sunil Dutt. Dutt is said to have saved her life on the sets of Mother India from a fire. She was also said to have aided Dutt’s mother and sister. On March 11, 1958, they married. When she married, she converted to Hinduism. Sanjay, Namrata, and Priya were their three children.
Sanjay Dutt went on to have a great acting career in films. Namrata married actor Kumar Gaurav, the son of famous actor Rajendra Kumar, who co-starred in Mother India with Nargis and Sunil Dutt. Priya rose through the ranks of politics to become a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha).
Nargis co-founded the Ajanta Arts Cultural Troupe with her husband, which featured several famous performers and singers of the day and performed at remote frontiers to entertain Indian soldiers.
It was the first troupe to perform in Dhaka following Bangladesh’s liberation war in 1971. Nargis afterwards became involved in the cause of spastic children. She was the first sponsor of the Indian Spastics Society. Her volunteer work for the organisation earned her the title of a social worker.
Nargis enjoyed wearing white saris, talking on the phone, and eating panipuris from street vendors. She was a strong swimmer who loved to play cricket with her brothers. Mithu Alur, the founder of the Spastic Society of India, claimed in an interview that Nargis had an ambition of becoming a doctor that she was never able to realise.
Illness and death
Nargis fell unwell during a Rajya Sabha session on August 2, 1980, and the culprit was initially thought to be jaundice. She was flown back to Bombay and admitted to Breach Candy Hospital. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1980 after fifteen days of tests, during which her condition worsened and she rapidly lost weight. She received treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
Her illness worsened upon her return to India, and she was hospitalised at Breach Candy Hospital. Nargis fell into a coma after becoming extremely unwell on May 2, 1981, and died the next day. She was laid to rest in Marine Lines, Mumbai, at Badakabarastan. One seat was kept vacant for her during the opening of her son Sanjay Dutt’s breakthrough film Rocky on May 7, 1981.
Sunil Dutt launched the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation in her honour one year after her death. Though cancer was largely blamed for Nargis’ death, her daughter Namrata revealed that she had beaten pancreatic cancer but died of a urinary tract infection. Her reduced immunity levels, according to her son Sanjay, made her vulnerable to the virus.
Legacy
The R. K. Films logo was inspired by a scene from Raj Kapoor’s 1949 film Barsaat, in which he is seen cradling Nargis in one arm and a violin in the other.
Manisha Koirala portrayed Nargis in the 2018 film Sanju, a biopic of her son Sanjay Dutt. The movie is one of the highest-grossing Indian films of the year. In the 2018 film Manto, Feryna Wazheir played her.
