Routh was the third of four children born to Catherine LaVaughn, a teacher, and Ronald Ray Routh, a carpenter, in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up in the adjacent town of Norwalk. Routh is of English, Scottish, German, and Dutch descent and was raised in a Methodist home.
