Dhawan was born on April 24, 1987, to film director David Dhawan and Karuna Dhawan. His ancestors are Punjabi. Rohit, his older brother, is a film director best known for his debut film Desi Boyz, and Anil, his uncle, is an actor. The H.R. College of Commerce and Economics provided him with his HSC education.
