When he was six years old, his local football club, Liverpool, conducted a half-term camp for a number of students from his school, and his name was selected out of a hat to attend.
He was noticed there by academy coach Ian Barrigan, who approached his parents and offered him a place in the club’s academy. He began training two to three times per week in a variety of positions before eventually becoming the club’s captain at the U16 and U18 levels under coach Pepijn Lijnders. In the interim, he left St. Mary’s at the age of 14 to enrol at Rainhill High School, a school that is affiliated with the football club.

International career
Youth
Alexander-Arnold has played for England at various levels since he was a teenager, including at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. He also scored three goals for the England U19 team, including a brace against Croatia and a goal against Spain that helped England qualify for the 2017 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
He didn’t play in the tournament because Liverpool and England agreed to rest him ahead of the following season’s league campaign, but the Three Lions went on to win the competition for the first time, defeating Portugal in the final.
He was called up to the England U21 team for the first time following the tournament for UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers against the Netherlands and Latvia and made his debut in a 3–0 win over the latter. He made two more appearances with the U21 side before being promoted and cementing his place in the senior England camp.
Senior
Alexander-Arnold was invited to practise with the senior national team for the first time in March 2018, while still a member of the U21 team, ahead of friendly matches against Italy and the Netherlands. He was called up for the first time in May 2018, when he was chosen to Gareth Southgate’s World Cup team. On June 7, 2018, he made his debut in a 2–0 pre-tournament friendly win over Costa Rica at Elland Road.
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, presented him with his match jersey prior to the match. Alexander-Arnold then made his competitive debut on June 28, starting in a 1–0 group-stage loss to Belgium after both teams had already qualified for the knockout stages. As a result, he became only the fourth teenager to start a World Cup match for England.
However, it was his only appearance, as Kieran Trippier was preferred at right-back and played the entire match as England lost to Croatia in the semi-finals and subsequently to Belgium in the third-place play-off.
Personal life
Alexander-Arnold is the nephew of John Alexander, a former Reading and Millwall footballer and Manchester United club secretary. Doreen Carling, his maternal grandmother, had a relationship with former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson before moving to New York City and marrying.
