Gopichand was born in a village near Tangutur in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district. He is the younger son of filmmaker T. Krishna, who died when he was eight years old.
He attended Nil Desperandum School in Ongole (founded by his father) and Ramakrishna Mission School in Chennai. In Russia, he studied mechanical engineering.
