College golf career
College golf powerhouses scouted Woods aggressively. Stanford University, the 1994 NCAA champions, was his choice.
He arrived at Stanford on a golf scholarship in the fall of 1994 and won his first collegiate event, the 40th Annual William H. Tucker Invitational, in September of that year.
Notah Begay III, a college teammate, gave him the moniker “Urkel” because of his economics major.
He was named Pac-10 Player of the Year, NCAA First Team All-American, and Stanford’s Male Freshman of the Year in 1995 after successfully defending his US Amateur title at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island (an award that encompasses all sports).
In August 1996, Woods went professional at the age of 20 and promptly secured advertising partnerships with Nike, Inc., and Titleist, which at the time were the most lucrative endorsement deals in golf history.
Woods was selected Sportsman of the Year and PGA Tour Rookie of the Year by Sports Illustrated in 1996.
He won his first major, the Masters, on April 13, 1997, in record-breaking fashion, becoming the tournament’s youngest winner at the age of 21.
He achieved the record for the fastest ascension to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings two months later.
After a disappointing 1998, Woods won eight times in 1999, including the PGA Championship, a mark not accomplished since Johnny Miller in 1974.
Woods married Elin Nordegren, a Swedish former model, and daughter of former migration minister Barbro Holmberg and radio journalist Thomas Nordegren, in November 2003.
They met at The Open Championship in 2001, when Swedish golfer Jesper Parnevik, who had hired her as an au pair, introduced them.
They married on October 5, 2004, at the Sandy Lane resort in Barbados, and they lived in Isleworth, a neighborhood in Windermere, Florida.
They bought a $39 million estate in Jupiter Island, Florida, in 2006 and started building a 10,000-square-foot home there; Woods moved there in 2010 after the couple divorced.
