Hatcher was born in Palo Alto, California, on December 8, 1964, to Esther, a Lockheed Martin computer programmer, and Owen Walker Hatcher, Jr., a nuclear scientist, an electrical engineer. Her father is of English, Welsh, and Irish origin (with Choctaw ancestry, according to Hatcher), while her mother is of Syrian, Czech, and Irish ancestry.

Hatcher was raised in Sunnyvale, California, and studied ballet at the San Juan School of Dance in Los Altos. She majored in mathematics and engineering at De Anza College.
