In March–April 2007, he was included in the Indian team’s 15-member squad for the 2007 Cricket World Cup, which was held in the West Indies.

Indian Premier League
In the 2008 Indian Premier League, Uthappa played for Mumbai Indians and had a good debut season.
He scored 48 runs off 38 balls in his first encounter against Royal Challengers Bangalore. He scored 43 (36), including six fours and a six, in the next game against Chennai Super Kings.
He put together an undefeated 123-run combination with Dwayne Bravo against Kolkata Knight Riders, scoring a run-a-ball 37 to help Mumbai win easily.
Then he hit 34 off only 21 deliveries to lead Mumbai to a comprehensive victory over the Rajasthan Royals, who were in fine form.
