Richard Childress Biography

Driving profession

Childress’ NASCAR career began in 1969 when NASCAR president William France Sr. was looking for substitute drivers after a drivers’ strike at Talladega Superspeedway. Childress began racing as an independent driver in 1971, under the number 96.

In 1976, he switched to number three as a tribute to Junior Johnson. He never won a race, but he was a good and steady driver, finishing in the top five-six times, seventy-six times, and five times in the Top 10 point standings, with a career-best fifth-place result in 1975. In 1974, he did win the Metrolina 200, an unauthorized invitational race.

After Rod Osterlund sold his NASCAR team to J.D. Stacy and Osterlund’s driver Dale Earnhardt refused to compete for Stacy, he retired from racing in 1981.

Richard Childress Career

With the help of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Childress decided to retire and put Earnhardt behind the wheel of his No. 3 vehicle, which was sponsored by Wrangler Jeans.

Earnhardt’s first partnership lasted only one season. Ricky Rudd joined the Childress team in 1982 and drove for two years, winning his maiden race in June 1983 at Riverside.

Earnhardt returned for the 1984 season, teaming up with Childress to form one of NASCAR’s most potent combos. In 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993, and 1994, Earnhardt won the title.

On the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, Earnhardt was slain. Kevin Harvick, a Busch driver, was promoted to drive the renumbered No. 29. At the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Harvick would win in only his third start.

RCR became the first team in NASCAR history to win all three national championship series, with Harvick winning the Busch Series championship in 2001 and 2006.

RCR drivers Kevin Harvick and Jeff Green had a feud during the 2003 Pontiac Excitement 400.

Green assisted RCR in the formation of the No. 27 Chevrolet team in the Cup series in 2001. The No. 27 was then known as the No. 30 and was sponsored by AOL, with Green driving.

Green and Harvick had a Busch Series rivalry, but they dismissed the notion that they couldn’t get along. With 128 laps remaining in the race, Harvick wrecked Green, knocking him out.

Green retaliated by attacking Todd Berrier, Harvick’s crew chief, in the No. 29 pit stall, prompting Richard Childress to restrain him.
