Russo was born in Burbank, California, in 1954, to Shirley, a factory worker and barmaid, and Nino Russo, a sculptor and auto mechanic who abandoned the family when she was two years old.
Her father was Italian, and her mother was of Italian, German, and English descent. Russo attended Burroughs High School with her mother and sister, Toni (who was married to songwriter Bernie Taupin from 1979 until 1991), and was a classmate of director Ron Howard.
