Sterling grew up in the Maverley neighborhood of Kingston, Jamaica, where he was born and raised. Sterling’s father was murdered when he was two years old in Jamaica.
He moved to Neasden, London, with his mother when he was five years old, and attended Copland School in Wembley, north-west London. Sterling spent three years at Vernon House, a specialty school in Neasden, due to behavioral issues.

On July 12, 2015, he agreed to join Manchester City for an initial fee of £44 million, with the possibility of a further £5 million in add-ons, subject to personal conditions and a physical, making him the most expensive English footballer of all time.

Sterling scored his first competitive goal for Manchester City in a 2–0 win over Watford at the City of Manchester Stadium nineteen days later. On October 17, Sterling scored his first professional hat-trick as City defeated Bournemouth 5–1.
Sterling’s international career began about the time the “home nations agreement” was enacted. FIFA did not agree to the English, Northern Irish, Scottish, and Welsh Football Associations’ plans to revise the agreement until September 2009, allowing players who had spent five years or longer in their country to be eligible for their national team. Sterling initially played for England at the under-16 level in a match against Northern Ireland in November 2009.
Sterling made his senior England debut on November 14, 2012, in a friendly against Sweden. Sterling received his second cap and was named man of the match when England defeated Denmark 1–0 in a friendly match at Wembley Stadium on March 5, 2014.
Sterling was chosen to England’s 23-man team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on May 12, 2014. Sterling slid into Antonio Valencia, who retaliated by grabbing Sterling’s neck, in a pre-tournament friendly against Ecuador in Miami on 4 June; both earned red cards for their actions.
Valencia later expressed regret for his actions. Sterling started England’s first group encounter, a 2–1 loss to Italy in Manaus, on 14 June, and was named the team’s outstanding performer by the BBC.
Sterling was quoted in 2013 as claiming he was influenced by his mother “Although I am not completely religious, my faith is strong. I shall become fully Christian when the time comes.” He also stated that he believes in God and prays on a regular basis.
Melody Rose, his daughter from a previous relationship, was born in 2012. His grandmother, who was living in America at the time and wanted to name him after Shaquille O’Neal, gave him the middle name Shaquille.
